This part of IEC 62485 applies to the installation of one or more stationary secondary batteries having a maximum aggregate DC voltage of 1500 V to any DC part of the power network, and describes the principal measures for protections during normal operation or under expected fault conditions against hazards generated from: electricity; short-circuits; electrolyte; gas emission; fire; explosion. This document provides requirements on safety aspects associated with the installation, use, inspection, and maintenance and disposal of lithium ion batteries used in stationary applications. This document covers stationary batteries for industrial applications that are installed in separate closed buildings or housings as well as stationary batteries that are installed in public buildings, offices and private residences. This document also covers the maintenance and disposal of lithium ion batteries used in stationary applications. Batteries containing lithium metal are not covered by this document. Examples of the main applications are; telecommunications; power station operation; central emergency lighting and alarm systems; uninterruptible power supplies (UPS); stationary engine starting; photovoltaic systems. In general, the safety requirements for secondary batteries and battery installations - General safety information and definitions are specified for lead-acid, nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hybrid batteries in accordance with IEC 62485-1.
This part of IEC 62485 applies to battery installations used for electric off-road vehicles; it does not cover the design of such vehicles. Examples of the main applications are: industrial; cleaning machines; trucks for material handling, for example, lift trucks, tow trucks, automatic guided vehicles; electrically propulsed lifting platforms; other applications; electric powered boats and ships. This document covers the safety aspects of battery installations in such applications. This document does not cover railway vehicles, for traction railway application, see IEC 62928. This document does not cover batteries and battery installations for the propulsion of electric road vehicles. In the event of there being a variation of requirements between this document and those of a relevant product standard (e. g. goods vehicles, bicycles, wheel chairs, golf carts), then the product standard requirements take precedence. Lithium ion cells and batteries used in traction industrial application are intended to fulfil safety requirements in accordance with IEC 62619. The maximum voltages are limited to AC 1000 V and to DC 1500 V, and the principal measures for protection against hazards, generally from electricity, gas emission and electrolyte to prevent fire and explosion are described. This document provides requirements on safety aspects associated with the installation, use, inspection, maintenance and disposal of lithium ion batteries. Batteries containing lithium metal are not covered by this document. In general, the safety requirements for secondary batteries and battery installations - General safety information and definitions are specified for lead-acid, nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hybrid batteries in accordance with IEC 62485-1.
1.1 These requirements cover self-contained drinking-water coolers which employ hermetic refrigerantmotor-compressors and which are designed for connection to alternating-current circuits rated not greaterthan 600 volts in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. The requirements also apply towater coolers which supply both hot and cold water.1.2 These requirements do not include additional requirements applicable to equipment designed for usein hazardous locations as defined in the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70.1.3 A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or differentfrom those covered by the requirements in this standard, and that involves a risk of fire, electric shock, orinjury to persons shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-productrequirements as determined necessary to maintain the acceptable level of safety as originally anticipatedby the intent of this standard. A product whose features, characteristics, components, materials, orsystems conflict with specific requirements or provisions of this standard cannot be judged to comply withthis standard. Where considered appropriate, revision of requirements shall be proposed and adopted inconformance with the methods employed for development, revision, and implementation of this standard.
