This British Standard specifies requirements for flexible loadbearing combustion modified, polyurethanecellular materials, manufactured in block, sheet and strip form, in moulded and fabricated shapes and asreconstituted material.Materials defined as combustion modified are those that meet the legal and technical requirements ofthe Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 [1], the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire)(Safety) (Amendment) Regulations 1989 [2] and the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety)(Amendment) Regulations 1989 [3] for use in domestic upholstered furniture, mattresses and bed bases.NOTE 1 Annex A reproduces the relevant test requirements. In addition to the definitive requirements, this standard also requires the items detailed in Clause 3 to bedocumented. For compliance with this standard, both the definitive requirements and the documenteditems have to be satisfied.NOTE 2 Recommended applications for the range of flexible polyurethane cellular materials specified in this standard are listed inAnnex B.
This British Standard describes methods for assessing the ignitability ofsingle material combinations, e.g. covers and fillings used inupholstered seating, or complete items of seating, when subjectedeither to a smouldering cigarette or to flaming ignition sources ofthermal output ranging from that of a burning match to thatapproximating to the burning of four double sheets of full-sizenewspaper, as might be applied accidentally to any item of furniture.NOTE 1 It does not necessarily cover ignition caused by deliberate actsof vandalism with arson. The following methods are described:a) upholstered seating composites tested with flaming ignitionsources (sources 2 to 7) (Clause 11);b) complete items of upholstered furniture tested with smoulderingor flaming ignition sources (sources 0 to 7) (Clause 12).NOTE 2 Possible ways in which the standard can be used either toindicate the potential ignitability of components in conjunction with otherspecified materials or where more specific information is required aboutdesign features are given in Annex B.
